new mobile app "romeo uncut" backup-export is missing

ShowMeyourway shared this idea 2 years ago
Planned

Since the last update there is no more an option to do a backup or export.

As I love to keep my msg history but sometimes I need to reset my mobile I am in need for a backup!

Also I am a multi-device user so I'd love to transfer my profiles and chats whenever I get a new tablet, mobile etc

Please re-integrate the backup/export function asap

Thanks in advance

horny greetings

Mike

Hi Mike,

thank you very much for your comment.

We are currently working on developing a cloud based alternative to the export button, which we hope to implement in the near future.

Kind regards,

Well, so delete one feature, when you are ready with the other...

@ShowMeourway: to import my messages after a reset of my phone, i downloaded an older version and imported my messages. After that i updated and hope to find a similar feature the next time i have to backup messages!

thank you. you helped me

@gr_user - How did you install an older version though? On my mobile it doesn't seem to work. You'd probably have to uninstall the newer version first, but that would delete all your messages, right?

Hey planetromeo,

seven months ago you said the following: "... which we hope to implement in the near future.“

Is there any update on that? I think the 'near future' is long past, and meanwhile i am still using the old version of the app, just so i can continue backing up my chats.

This was a super shitty thing to do to your users.

have to agree… @PR, to say it clearly: if there would be another company who developes a good app there would be because of that 10 % chance to take your role of market leader

actually not in such cases, because it makes only sense to register for a social website if there are many other one… but if the market leader screw things up, the situation is another one!

Hello? ... Any update on this?!

I'm still using the old pre-gimped version of the app. It sure would be nice to be able to update it one day without actually LOSING FEATURES!

I have exactly the same problem. You could at least warn the user before updating the app.

I am using Samsung Knox in which I have installed the UNCUT app. The environment itself prevents such apps for installing if they are not downloaded from google play store. In order to install the app I am first installing to the general (private) space and then I move the app into Knox, which is encrypted and protected sandbox. Previously when there was new version of the app I backed up all data, uninstall the app from Knox, download the latest UNCUT app in my private space, install it, moved the app into knox and then restore the backed up data. When I did this on the last version I was surprised that the backup option is missing and I have lost years of conversations with people.

Again you should at least warn users on time in order for them to take some actions especially when you are removing critical feature from the app.

For a senior software engineer as I am, such move is very unprofessional. The old backup feature should be gracefully transferred to the new platform and then turned off and not the opposite. You turned off important feature letting users to wait for months before the new cloud solution is developed...

Disappointing....

(sorry for my bad english, but the admin said in another topic to me, that we have to talk english here)

yes i dont understand this. some weeks ago my handy got broken and i was very sad, because i thought im gonna lose all messages. (i use the app since 2014 till today) i just found a message backUp from 2014 on google drive. a bit time later i found a backUp with some messages from october 2016 and got all message from january / february 2014 till october 2016 back. but i lost some messages from october 2016 - december 2016. at the first moment i was really sad, because messages means for me "memories" and its really nice to have the old messages from a chat. if they didnt remove this function, i could save more messages.

i dont unterstand, why people do delete this importan function and why gayromeo dont save all messages on the website. gayromeo is a chat website and the app is a chat app ! and i think the most importan thing from a chat website or a chat app are the messages ! facebook arent a chat site, but they still do save all messages and more.

in the last 1-2 weeks i got 200-250 messages from another people and chat with some people (that means more messages) i dont know how many messages i got every month, but i think 200 messages in month is many. imagine you got 100 messages in a month, with 12 months in a year you would got 1200 messages + all other years and you lose all the messages ...for me it would be hard to lose all my messages.

I assume, the PlanetRomeo team don't read the comments after the status got changed to "Planned".

Have to agree, I absolutely don't understand that – usually, it don't create more work to keep the feature, because it's already developed… You don't needed to be a fortune-teller to know that that change will create much annoyance.

Hi Guys,

we are very sorry for the inconvenience that this has caused. Truly we are.

However, we experienced technical difficulty with the previous export data feature that could have caused more issues if we left it in.

Whilst we are working on a new solution for this, we do suggest that you can use apps which are free and easy to download from the Play Store, and do the same job. This will allow you to back up your data from the app.

We will keep you informed about the developments of the new export data feature as and when we can.

Once again, we are very sorry for the inconvenience.

Kind regards,

PLANETROMEO

As far as I see, you have to have a rooted smartphone for Titanium, probably for all other apps with the same purpose too... at most manufacturers, you will loose in that case the warranty.

What do you think of gr_user's suggestion of installing for a short time a old version of the app, backup the messages and then reinstall the new version?

And, PLEASE don't forget to introduce a possibility to migrate the old messages which are saved in the app in the new cloud-based message storage.

photo

Hello,

well, what I read in PlanetRomeo's answer is that we can get the backup feature back if we download the regular Play Store application. In my case, as I have the Uncut version on my phone, the Play Store says it's already installed. So, I'm stuck…

I assume that if I remove the Uncut version before installing the regular version, I'm gonna lose all my messages, am I right?

photo
39

No, no. What PlanetRomeo means is the following: the messages are saved in Android system directories. You can download a third party app, which is able to save the data.

But, as far as I saw, that works only if you have rooted smartphone (means to install a custom firmware). And at most smartphone manufacturers, you will loose the warranty, if you root your smartphone. Furthermore, you can backup the data after the rooting, but I assume the data get lost by the rooting.

For me, it's no problem as long as I don't have to reset my smartphone.

If it would be necessary to reset it, I'll 1) install a old version of the app with the export version (I saved all old versions on my phone), 2) export the messages, 3) reset my device, reinstall the old version (or maybe is the new one is also working for the import), 4) import the messages, 5) install the new version from the app.

Unfortunately, the PlanetRomeo didn't answer to my question what they think about that way of problem solving. Maybe it'll create any other problems (store format of the messages might be changed with the new versions, and downgrade from new to old version create problems). Maybe it works without problems.

@Kuschelmuschel, thanks for the explanations. As I don't want to root my phone, I'll wait the release of the cloud backup feature :)

photo
43

@Kuschelmuschel, your problem solving may not work because of the following reason: The database format changes from time to time. A newer version of the app can read an older database and converts it into the new format at the first start (then you see a message like "optimizing data base 0% ... 100%). But there is no way back, so older versions of the app may not be able to read the database from recent app versions. I know this is the case for the iOS app, and I think it also applies to the Android app.

@PLANETROMEO again:

I fully agree with metabaron - as a former software engineer and meanwhile consultant I am aware of the complexity of software systems.

Nevertheless you owe us a solution working well and easy. Only announcing there are 'other software doing this' is like telling a burning house 'there are other ways to stop the fire do not ask a fireman'

If you delete such essential feature - you should have to stop deleting msg's from the server till you fix the problem.

I use to have long term chats and conversations, some going back till 2014 in my history and I make use of such details friends told me once - esp. about there likes for presents, birthday and priv. details to be aware of not to scare ppl with etc

If you need to re-design backup funktion:

a) if you use mysql or similar a dump should be no problem.

b) encryption can be done either with db internal tools or just

- b1) compress as a zip 7z and encrypt with login pwd

- b2) encrypt the dump after dumping - AES etc is free to use and mobiles are performant today

c) optimize the process

- c1) one dump per account (some of use use several accounts)

- c2) choose destination by user or default

- c3) upload to gdrive / clouds

- c4) sent conversations by mail (similar as the web m.PR offers)

- c5) offer conversation mail as pdf including the pix

- c6) auto sent weekly/monthly by mail conversations and or dumps before deleting online

(yes I am aware of the traffic ....)

.. current I am running 3 devices in parallel hoping one will last till you offer a backup again before I loose all my old conversations

Again:

if there is a way to backup - please name the file, directory to backup and how to re-import

and hurry up speedy to solve the missing feature

This is bullshit. Now i would lose all messages when i upgrade my phone. Arg. I was about to delete my account in response, until i saw that it is planned to bring this back. But there is still totally user hostile to remove an important feature like that without warning. Had i known i would never have upgraded. Now i have to find an old apk. Man.... This is exactly the kind of behaviour that destroys user loyalty, just so your developers can have a less complicated task.

photo
60

but that's the exact reason they didn't warn you ;)

it's funny to see that the export option got removed at the same time they drastically reduced filter functionality.

i bet many (me included) thought about downgrading with an old apk. finding one is rather simple but without the export in the newest veriosn you can't just delete the app and install on older version without losing all your conversations.

Shame to him who thinks evil of it ;)

i'm on the brink of deleting it anyway. the old filter options are worth more to me than the conversations...

by the way, this is not the only time a feature is supposed to be updated but simply gets removed without any replacement for it.

photo
41

I downgraded, luckily i had been making regular backups. So the newest conversations were still available in the cloud, and everything else was in the backup. So i didn't lose anything in the end.

Now i just need to sit on this is version for as long as it takes for them to bring back the backup feature. I don't have high hopes though, this kind of thing always takes a year or more, despite whatever the devs say. I don't think they can expect any trust from their users anymore after something like this.

photo
41

I hope they fired the noob who got the idea at first place.

photo
37

be assured that this was by no means a mistake by a single developer but a conscious and thought through management desicion in their efforts to sell more plus memberships.

be aware that with every update, especially those claiming to include improvements for users you are very likely to get screwed even more.

don't expect to be provided with solutions that actually satisfy your needs in any way. they wont make it easy or loss-free to return to an older version that includes free functionality they try to make you pay for in the new version.

still no answer to the main question

?? how and what to backup manally??

The informations will not bring you to an solution. Read my comment about backup and restore using Helium.

Hello from the future. 2 years on and still no backup option!

photo
photo

is the backup function on the roadmap? transferring data from one device to another isn't an uncommon use case. removing such essential functions is annoying. so please, let us know what's your plan.

photo
33

I got a notification that an update is available but nothing happens when i download it. Am i stuck with this version? Data on my app is very important so i dont wanna lose it. And installing an older version is not possible unless uninstalling my current version, possibly deleting my data in effect. At least restore the feature or release the stavle previous version as a new one momentarily for us to backup once more...

Backup and Restore using Helium in Android worked - WITHOUT ROOT!

I did it with Uncut App 2.13.3....This app has no import/export function already.

You only need is the app (from PlayStore) and a PC with the Helium (former Carbon) application and the Helium universal ABD driver (you get it on there webpage).

The only problems I had:

- Connecting the phone: Windows did not install the correct driver. Install it manually via device manager (search driver on disk -> choose form list -> ClockworkMod and so on)

- Restoring backup without app installed. Reinstall app on new device, running Helium, prepair device with PC, Restoring.

After starting the app, you get an error.....Not logged in or incorrect password. Login with your account details and look if it worked.

Notice: Use the same app version on both devices. You can Backup the APK in your Old device with ES File Explorer dir example.

Works perfectly, thank you!

Any news?

I successfully have moved the complete data from one device to another. This is special for moving Sony Xperia phones but the is alternative software for other devices. How I did it:

1. Start The Backup / Transer App Xperia Transfer

2. Follow the steps shown on the screens of both devices

3. After Successful copy (if you had installed the uncut app), install it again without uninstalling

4. open the uncut app

5. don't use the shown saved accounts. instead tap on login with account credentials

6. use one of the old used accounts.

7. repeat again for all other old accounts

=> After that you have moved all the data to a new device.

This should also work with other "settings movement tools" from the app store, which copy all application data from one device to another.

Good luck for everybody

My Android needed to be replaced so I had no choice but to bid farewell to my chat history. My previous backup was October 2016, so that's what I used to restore to the 2.8 version of the app.

If you guys need tips or reminding in looking for old your backup files, (maybe stored in the cloud, emails or SD cards):

> Default backup filename is PR_BACKUP.BAK (if searching in your email, input in the search query box FILENAME:BAK)

> The default folder path if saved in the phone's internal storage is /STORAGE/EMULATED/0/BACKUP/. Default folder path for SD cards would be dependent on the model.

For the techier ones, I've read that you can backup and restore app data via ADB if you have your bootloader unlocked and have the "Allow USB Debugging" (Under Developer Options) ticked. IF your bootloader is still locked, DON'T DO IT. Unlocking the bootloader wipes the phone data.

Even Grindr has now chat's backup. Hornet has always had. Romeo, that had this function in the past, is now the only gay app without it. Simply absurd

Bought a new phone, I've spent half a day to bring my Romeo's data on new device. The fault is surely of those who are unable to develop a good backup app, and of Google, that hasn't thought about this function on his o.s. yet. But the 1st responsable is Romeo, that deleted this function from his app without an appreciable reason, and nowadays, about 2 years later, hasn't reitroduced it yet, despite our requests and the promise to do it soon.

Thanks Romeo!

Such app does not exist. And no you can't. For security reasons, apps on android are not allowed to see/take private data from other apps. Or would you rather that your newest flashy puzzle game decided to spy on your bank app? This behaviour can only be changed by granting root acces to some app, which can then pull anything from any other app.

photo
1

the app is this:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.backup

and i already use it for a total backup (app + data).. and i had recovered successfully on 3 smartphone.. and without root.

photo
1

I have used it too. Very bad experience.

photo
1

Does it allow you to display the content of the file "in clear" ?

photo
1

not in clear... the app export a pack in .ab format and a file .json

photo
1

well... I tried. Result? Surprise: it didn't work. I had to login anew and no old messages were recovered

photo

there is an app on android "HELIUM" backup that can doe a root backup of some apps/date with the use of a fix thru USB debugging and Computer. i used it before and it worked well. but after an update of Romeo my database went very slow as it converting the way images are stored or accessed. so i don't know if has something to do on how HELIUM makes the backup but now i can still see my old chat history from before the backup, but i can not scroll down the conversation anymore, it always flips back tot the last messages, very hatefull.
